Government Initiatives

 

The National Research Fund has considered new materials and nanotechnology as a priority in one of its seven multi-annual priority programmes with an allocated 6.7 million euros. The Nano programme aims at creating a European Centre specialised in the characterisation of materials at the nanometre scale.

 

Luxembourg Portal for Innovation and Research

The government runs a webportal for innovation and research which provides information on innovation.

 

Ministry of the Middle Classes, Tourism and Housing

The Department of Middle Classes at the Ministry of the Middle Classes, Tourism and Housing is the contact point for SMEs and has the authority to create new legislation, authorise Government funds for middle market businesses and commercial markets. The Ministry develops actions plans for creating new support actions for SMEs.

 

 

Public and Private Initiatives

 

Luxinnovation

Luxinnovation is the National Agency for Innovation and Research and the first-stop shop for research and innovation in Luxembourg. Luxinnovation offers its entire range of services to all sectors of the Luxembourg economy. Its customised services are provided free of charge by multidisciplinary advisers to: SMEs and large-sized firms, private research centres and laboratories, public research centres and institutes, researchers, entrepreneurs and individuals promoting projects.

 

Innovation Relay Centre (IRC)

Luxinnovation also hosts the IRC in Luxembourg. The IRC provides innovation support service and is closely connected to German partners in Trier and Saarbrücken.

 

SurfMat cluster

The Ministry of Economic Affairs launched a technology cluster programme in 2002 with a view to develop synergies between Luxembourg-based companies. The SurfMat technology cluster, launched by several Luxembourg-based companies, is the first of such groups developed in Luxembourg, and represents companies that are active in the field of surface treatment (Surf) and new materials (Mat).

 

Network of Excellence for Chemical Nanotechnology

This network of excellence has been set up with the aim to develop a cross border regional centre between the areas of Lorraine and Luxembourg. Since 1999, the Network of Excellence has been offering associated enterprises, research institutes, founders and investors a common platform for cooperation, exchange, further education and advanced training and contact with the public.
